Lesson Four

Puffskein

A Puffskein is covered in soft, fur and spherical in shape. It is a popular pet that does not object to being cuddled or thrown about. The Puffskein is a scavenger, eating anything from leftovers to spiders, but it particularly likes to use its long thin tongue to eat wizards' bogeys while they sleep. The Puffskein is easy to care for, and they emit a humming sound when they are content.

Ramora

The Ramora is a silver fish native to the Indian Ocean that has strong magical power to anchor ships in place. The Ramora is an immensely powerful magical fish in the world of magic, and is a guardian of the seafarers. The International Confederation of Wizards enforce anti-poaching laws to protect this creature from illegal wizard capture. "Ramora" is another version of Remora, which in latin means 'delay', hence its ability to anchor ships in place.

Bowtruckle

The Bowtruckle is immensely difficult to spot, being a hand-sized, insect eating, tree dweller with long sharp fingers (two on each hand), brown eyes, and a general appearance of a flat-faced little stickman made of bark and twigs, which serves well as camouflage in its natural habitat.
The word "bow" was an old Scottish dialect means "dwelling," and "limb of tree" or "truckle" in old English dialect. This means "to take a subordinate position."
The Bowtruckle can be found in western England, southern Germany, and certain Scandinavian forests. A Bowtruckle serves as a tree guardian for its home tree, which is usually a tree whose wood makes wands (such as Wiggentree). The twig-like fingers are well adapted for digging out wood lice in trees, and can also be used as a weapon against a foe when aimed at the eyes. It is generally a peaceful creature, but will become violent if anything threatens its tree, or even to itself. To take leaves or wood from a Bowtruckle's tree, one would have to offer it wood lice or fairy eggs as a distraction.

Imp

Found only in Britain and Ireland, the Imp is a magical creature often confused with the Pixie. They are of similar height, between six to eight inches, but that is where the physical similarities end. The Imp cannot fly like the Pixie, nor is it as brightly coloured.
Imps make their home in marshland, where they indulge their slapstick sense of humour by pushing and tripping the unwary. The Imp's diet consists mainly of insects. Imp breeding habits are like the Pixie's, but their young hatch full formed.
